HTI
(Hard-Target Interdiction) is the practise of engaging material-type
targets that are considered theater strategic assets. Eliminating
targets in the HTI mission scope would have a great impact on
the ability of the enemy to wage war or defend itself against
further strategic targeting.
- Dean Michaelis
This is propably THE .50 cal. book since there a very few others
on the market that concentrate especially on 50. caliber rifles
and their military applications.
It's only fitting that the book on big guns is big itself. The
Complete .50-caliber Sniper Course Hard Target Interdiction
has 563 pages of pure business. The picture quality in
this book is quite bad occasionally, but fortunately the book
has other virtues that make up for the poor visual quality.
The author clearly knows what he is talking about and writes from
personal experence.
The book starts with a short history of HTI and quickly moves
into introducing the equipment of HTI operator. The book covers
a range of weapons and optics suitable for HTI purposes as well
as other gear such as hearing protection mounts etc.
Chapter 3 is about rifle maintenance and covers range of check
ups and maintenance procedures involved in heavy rifle shooting.
Chapter 4 deals with the problems and challenges of heavy rifle
shooting and training. The point being made is that snipers traned
with "small" .30 caliber rifles are not automaticly
capable of operating a heavy rifle with the required precision.
Chapter 5 explains the zeroing process of the heavy rifle and
chapter 6 goes into determining and correcting for meteorological
and environmental conditions. This is the part it starts to get
interesting (and difficult). When you move into chapter 7 that
explains range determination methods and procedures you start
to realize that there a few extra challeges to shooting a .50
cal compaed to the plain old 7.62...
In chapter 8 the author describes the HTI training process, its
contents and considerations and chapter 9 moves into the actual
application of fire. Chapter 10 is about field skills and tactical
operations. Topics like camouflage, movement, tracking and hide
building are cored under this chapter. In chapter 11 the author
goes through target analysis ( the process used to locate, isolate
and identify a specific target). As the books one major subject
is anti-material interdiction, engaging non personnel targets
is discussed in length.
Heavy rifle ammunition is much more complex matter than conventional
sniper ammunition and chapter 12 has little over 60 pages of
no nonsense information about ammo development and use.
The book also has a very usefull glossary section, reproducible
forms and data pages, HTI Program of Instruction, 5000 meter Sniper
Rifle concept and a .50 BMG Cartridge Tip Color Guide.
If you are interested in the military side of heavy rifle shooting
this book is definitely worth reading.
