Without
Warning - 20th Century Sniper Equipment of the Canadian Army is
an 8 ½" by 11" soft cover book containing 110
illustrations. All the pictures and drawings in the book are b&w.
Without Warning - 20th Century Sniper Equipment of the Canadian
Army is book #8 in the UpClose series of specialty books from
Service Publications. The book examines the rifles, telescopic
sights and camouflage of the canadian sniper. The book starts
with the First World War and the use of the Ross rifle & US
Warner-Swayze scope and continues to the McMillan 50. cal rifle
and its use in Afghanistan. The book pays special attention to
the many variations of rifle and scope used in the First World
War as well as the use of the Lee-Enfield and No.32 scope in Second
World War. There is all-new information on Canadian production
as well as development of experimental rifles and scopes during
the war. The book also covers the C3 and C3A1 as well as the US
Garand and FN series rifles in Canadian use. The entire text is
based author's research at the Canadian National Archives and
the Canadian Department of National Defense
As mentioned before the book starts from the First World War and
moves on to the modern day in pretty straight forward chronological
order. As the author is far more informed on the subject of the
Canadian sniper equipment than any of our staff members, we did
not even try to find any factual errors in this book. The subject
matter of this book is covered extremely well and the author has
clearly done his homework. The text is often complemented with
excerpts from military archives which makes the book a much more
interesting than if it had been based solely on the authors text.
Even though the illustrations are all b&w they are up to today's
standards and are of reasonably good quality. According to the
authors notes the photographs are a combination of new pictures
provided by collectors and volunteers and contemporary photos
found in old files. This would suggest that the pictures in this
book are unique as a somewhat comprehensive collection on the
subject matter.
If
you are interested in the particular subject matter this book
is a must have.
