The Rollypolly Folding Dump Pouch was provided to
us for testing by Maxpedition.
The Rollypolly is a folding dump pouch that can be quickly
deployed when needed and rolled out of way to small 3"x3"x1.75
package when not in use. It can of course be used for various
different purposes, but it really shines as a dump pouch
for used magazines. It's designed to take 7 30 round AR-15
magazines which is more than enough for most situations.
We were able to stuff 10 mags in the pouch, but it takes
too much time for it to work in real life.
The Rollypolly has elastic cords on two sides that can be
used to quickly close the pouch. The flap that holds the
pouch in closed positions also works when the pouch is open
& full of stuff. When the pouch is open the flap can
also be secured out of the way on the inside of the pouch
because there is a separate velcro patch on the inside.
A very nice touch. There is also a draining hole in the
bottom to allow water to exit the pouch. The pouch can be
carried on a belt or attached to Malice compatible gear
with Malice clips (sold separately).
Materials and workmanship
The first thing you notice when you get your hands on one
of these is that it's well made. Not a big surprise, because
all the Maxpedition gear we have reviewed have been top
quality items. As for the material it's of the usual high
quality that you would expect from Maxpedition, meaning
1000-Denier nylon fabric
with Teflon coating for easy maintenance. The stitching,
which is usually the first thing to fail on your "tactical
nylon" is also top notch.
Use
First and most importantly the pouch edges were stiff enough
to keep the pouch mouth open so you can actually quickly
"dump" stuff in there. Things that "conveniently"
fold away are usually everything but convenient, luckily
the Rollypolly can be brought into action in less than 5
seconds. While you can fit up to 10 mags in the pouch, you
are better of just putting them back where they came from,
if you need to dump more that 6-7 mags. While the flap can
be used to close the pouch, we found that you are better
of with using just the cords. It faster and you can tuck
away the flap on the inside of the pouch. Probably due to
the folding design the pouch has no means of holding the
mags in the pouch if you forget to close it, but the handy
size more than makes up for that. Because the pouch doesn't
attach to your leg it does tend to swing around a bit when
running with the pouch full of empty magazines. The belt
loop however is stiif and heavy duty enough that it's not
really an issue. Again, a very well thought out product
from Maxpedition.
F.Y.I.
Maxpedition also offers smaller /the Mini Rollypolly) and
larger versions (Mega Rollypolly) of the basic Rollypolly.
