Mission: Rifle Cases
Intelligence:
a sniper and his rifle are like an engine and transmission. For one to perform at its peak, it needs the other. What the sniper tried to do is make his
|
rifle feel like an extension of the body. A fitted, custom, precision stock is an integral part of any sniper rifle. Sometimes, a sniper will attach a cheek weld to the stock, or a custom butt pad. The sniper will pursue every avenue of perfection to ensure that his rifle stock feels like a stable, natural extension of his body. One expert former Navy sniper, who routinely demonstrated his precise competence by hitting golf balls at 800 yards with his .308 custom loads, suggested that he even went so far as to practice with his stock, and kept tweaking it until it was an absolutely perfect fit. He would keep his eyes closed, place his cheek on the stock, and then open his eyes. If he had a perfect sight picture, with no parallax, then he knew his gun fit. In addition, he would practice it, over and over again. That, is the single most determining factor of success in any profession, passion, or pursuit, be it proficiency with a sniper rifle, playing a musical instrument, or making a basketball shot. Practice makes perfect. Practicing with the proper stock setup will not only help you hit your

| target more accurately, it will also eliminateproblems with your scope. For instance, you don’t want to be hit by your scope when your rifle recoils, and you want to achieve the proper focal distance, or “eye relief” between your eyeball and the ocular lens. This will insure that you don’t “tunnel out” when looking through your scope. “Tunneling out” is what happens when you have the incorrect eye relief. What happens is that you experience dark, hazy circles around your target. The correct eye relief with the right amount of cheek-weld will help you eliminate that. Maybe you’ve heard rifle shooters or trap shooters talking about getting their guns fitted. What that means is shaping the stock in such a manner that it locks into your body in the most comfortable way. That involves getting the stock set up with the proper length, comfortable and consistent cheek-weld, and comfortable butt-stock. You can take your current rifle, change out the stock with one that it fitted to you, and you will find yourself shooting orders of magnitude better. Your shot placement will improve dramatically, as will your confidence in your shooting abilities. |
