A light stick uses a chemical reaction to excite the atoms in a chemical compound. Compounds are materials that are made up of different atoms covalently bonded together in set structures, and when two compounds are combined, what happens is that energy is either released or absorbed, depending on the compounds being mixed. In the case of light sticks, the compounds release energy, which excites the atoms in the compounds Phenyl Oxalate Ester (in the larger tube) and Hydrogen Peroxide (in the smaller, breakable vial). This heightened level of energy causes the electrons within the atoms to get excited as well, and move away from the nucleus. But this move is temporary for the electrons. As they eventually return to their normal energy level and orbit around the atom’s nucleus, the electrons give off that heightened temporary energy increase in the form of light emitting photons. The plastic light stick housing contains the whole process. You could sort of think of it as a portable chemistry experiment within a tube.
